On Thursday, April 17, the AFSCME Maryland team met with President Darryll Pines and other College Park leaders for a labor-management committee meeting regarding College Park.
The AFSCME Maryland team included the following AFSCME members:
- Saul Walker, Chief Steward of AFSCME Local 1072 and Higher Education Unit Vice President for AFSCME Maryland
- Todd Holden, President of AFSCME Local 1072
- Aleyda Hernandez, Executive Board Member of AFSCME Local 1072
- Dionne Williams, Trustee for AFSCME Local 1072
- Rocio Fregoso-Mota, Former Executive Board Member of AFSCME Local 1072 (and serving as interpreter)
- Marc Seiden, Field Representative/Organizer for AFSCME Maryland
- Patrick Moran, President of AFSCME Maryland
This meeting primarily focused on the potential impacts that university budget cuts will have on employees in AFSCME-represented units. The AFSCME Maryland team reiterated how understaffed many departments and teams are, including in facilities management, housekeeping, dining services and more. Safety and workload concerns are a big issue, and the AFSCME Maryland team communicated that any potential cuts must not impact AFSCME-represented employees.
We also discussed the conversion of many Contingent II employees to full-status state jobs, the establishment of a union office on campus, immigrant rights in the workplace, upcoming negotiations around telework, and more.
We are entitled to 6 labor-management committee meetings at each University System of Maryland institution a year. Please stay tuned for our next meeting update.
